Biography


Dr. Dipankar Das, MBBS, MS (Ophthalmology) works at Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya, Guwahati, Assam, India as a senior consultant, HOD (Uvea & Ocular Pathology) in the department of ocular pathology, uveitis & neuro-ophthalmology services. After completion of his ophthalmology residency in Guwahati Medical College, Assam, India; he did a fellowship in general ophthalmology at Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya and another in ocular pathology at Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai, under Dr. Jyotirmay Biswas and Dr. S. Krishna Kumar. He also completed a fellowship in uvea at the same time under Dr. Biswas in 2002. At the conference of the ophthalmological society of Assam (OSA), he had won the first Dr. K R Dutta best scientific paper award in 2004 for his study on ‘CMV Retinitis: First case report in northeast India’. In 2014, he received the best scientific poster award in the Uveitis Society of India annual conference in New Delhi for his poster on ‘Parasitic Uveitis’. In 2015, he got best scientific free paper award in ocular trauma society of India (OTSI) meet at Guwahati, India. At the 76th All India Ophthalmology Conference (AIOC) at Coimbatore, India-2018, his scientific paper was awarded the best in ocular pathology session. At 78th AIOC-Gurugram-India-2020, he received Indian Journal of Ophthalmology - Best Paper Award for one of his publications in 2019. He received Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO) "Achievement Award" and "Best Paper Award" at Malaysia in 2023. In 2025, he was honored with All India Ophthalmological Society (AIOS) scientific committee “Achievement Award”. He had got many other awards as author and travel fellowships for his scientific works. He had delivered the first Smt. Puspa Das Memorial Oration at the 46th ophthalmic society of West Bengal (OSWB) meet 2015 on ‘Pathology of Retinoblastoma- Basics and Advanced’. He has contribution in more than 200 scientific peer reviewed publications including 12 text-books chapters; more than 315 national & international presentations and is a member of several state, national and international level ophthalmology and pathology organizations. He is an author of “Atlas of ocular pathology” by published by Springer Nature. He had coined “Efferocytosis in retinoblastoma” for unique apoptotic changes in cancer biology and published in the journal of cancer therapy (2013). Dr. Das had discovered a new rosette in pathology of retinoblastoma (2014) and reported that this revealed rosette was associated with poor prognosis of retinoblastoma (2017). He had also discovered a staining method in ophthalmic pathology (2020) and had significant contributions in pathology of ocular parasitic diseases in last decade. Dr. Das is a co-inventor of a patent (IITG) for “Point-of-Care-Testing Devices for Diverse Diseases from Human Tear Biomarkers” (Patent No.: 569661; Application No. 201931028121; Dated 8.8.2025). He had also contribution in describing various disease related pathologies for the first time in the scientific world. Dr. Das and the Institution are having collaborative works with Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai; Veterinary Science College, Khanapara, Guwahati; NIPER-Guwahati and IIT-Guwahati. Moreover, being a reviewer of various prestigious ophthalmic journals and associate editor (Eye & Brain, Dove publications). In 2011, he did an observership in inflammation, uveitis and ophthalmic pathology at Doheny Eye Institute, Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, USA under Prof. Narsing A Rao. Currently, he had completed number of projects as a co-investigator(s) under DBT/ICMR in the institute. Dr. Das is thesis guide of many ophthalmology post graduate students in the Institute under Diplomate of National Board, National Board of Examination, Ministry of Health, Government of India. He is an external examiner of NBEMS, DNB ophthalmology theory and practical examinations. He has also been a vital part as principal investigator of multicenter international drug trials in uveitis and neuro-ophthalmology. Dr. Das is a member of Institute Human Ethics Committee of IIT Guwahati, India and IEC member of Dr. Bhubaneswar Borooah Cancer Institute (Dr. BBCI). He is an active member of International Uveitis Study Group (IUSG), International Ocular Inflammation Society (IOIS), International Society of Ocular Oncology (ISOO) and so on. Apart from active scientific research in basic and clinical ophthalmology, he has keen interest in photography (macro and micro), poetry, painting, literature, theology and indoor/outdoor sports. Dr. Das had published 6 books on English photo-poetry, titled ‘Reminiscences - In silent couplets!’ (2014); ‘Sparks of Joy’ (2016); ‘Firefly: On little wings’ (2017); ‘Soul of Indigo’ (2018) from Partridge India (A Penguin Random House Company); ‘Rays by Rain-A journey of 75 poems’ (2021) and Moments (Coffee Table Book, 2024) from White Falcon Publishing Solutions.
